Zilliqa is a pioneering blockchain platform that leverages sharding technology to achieve high throughput. Initially, Zilliqa employed a hybrid consensus model combining Proof-of-Work (PoW) and practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (pBFT). In this original system, PoW was used to establish node identity and prevent Sybil attacks, while pBFT was used to finalize blocks and reach consensus on the network state.
In 2021, the Zilliqa network transitioned from its hybrid PoW model to a pure Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. This upgrade, known as the "Staking" era, significantly reduced the energy footprint of the network and allowed $ZIL token holders to actively participate in securing the blockchain. The shift replaced computational mining with financial staking, opening up network participation to a much broader audience.
Today, Zilliqa coin mining primarily refers to staking $ZIL tokens. $ZIL holders can delegate their tokens to a staking node operator or run their own node to earn rewards. Rewards are distributed in $ZIL and $gZIL (governance Zilliqa). This staking mechanism provides a more accessible and environmentally friendly way for coin holders to generate yield compared to traditional energy-intensive Proof-of-Work mining found in older cryptocurrencies.
