Tony Bennett

Tony Bennett (born Anthony Dominick Benedetto; August 3, 1926 – July 21, 2023) was an American singer of traditional pop standards, big band, show tunes, and jazz. He was a highly acclaimed and popular artist, especially for his interpretations of the Great American Songbook.

Bennett began singing at an early age. He fought in World War II as a U.S. Army infantryman in the European theatre. After the war, he studied singing at the American Theatre Wing and developed a unique style. His first major hit was "Because of You" in 1951. Other popular songs followed, such as "Rags to Riches". He also made a famous recording of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" in 1962.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, Bennett experienced a major resurgence in popularity and critical acclaim. He introduced his work to a new generation of fans through appearances on MTV and collaborations with younger artists. His MTV Unplugged special won two Grammy Awards.

Bennett continued to record and perform well into his 90s. He collaborated with Lady Gaga on two albums, Cheek to Cheek (2014) and Love for Sale (2021), which were both commercial and critical successes. He retired from performing in 2021 and passed away in 2023 at the age of 96.

Bennett's legacy includes 20 Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award, and two Primetime Emmy Awards. He is remembered as one of the most beloved and enduring figures in American music.
