Tina Turner
Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock; November 26, 1939 – May 24, 2023) was an American-born Swiss singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress. Known as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll", she rose to fame as the lead singer of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue before launching a highly successful solo career.
Born in Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner began performing in clubs and soon joined Ike Turner's band. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue became one of the most electrifying live acts of the 1960s and 1970s, producing hits such as "River Deep – Mountain High" and "Proud Mary". Despite the professional success, Tina endured years of personal hardship, including an abusive marriage, which she later opened up about in her 1986 autobiography I, Tina.
After leaving Ike in 1976, Turner rebuilt her career from the ground up. Her 1984 album Private Dancer became a global phenomenon, winning four Grammy Awards and spawning the iconic single "What's Love Got to Do with It". She followed with successful albums and world tours throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Over her career she earned eight Grammy Awards, three Grammy Hall of Fame inductions, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Turner also acted in films such as Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and Last Action Hero (1993). Her life story inspired a 1993 biographical film What's Love Got to Do with It and a jukebox musical Tina: The Tina Turner Musical which premiered in 2018. In 2013 she married German music executive Erwin Bach, becoming a Swiss citizen in 2021.
