However, profitability depends on several factors: electricity cost, hardware efficiency, mining difficulty, and Bitcoin’s market price. It is important to research thoroughly before investing in mining equipment or contracts.
The process of mining also plays a critical role in securing the network against attacks. Because miners invest substantial resources in hardware and electricity, they are incentivized to act honestly. Attempting to alter past transactions would require redoing the proof of work for that block and all subsequent blocks, which becomes exponentially expensive as the chain grows. This makes the blockchain immutable once confirmed by multiple blocks.
Mining difficulty adjusts approximately every two weeks to ensure that blocks are found roughly every ten minutes, regardless of the total computational power of the network. When more miners join, difficulty increases; when miners leave, difficulty decreases. This self-regulating mechanism maintains the steady issuance of new bitcoins and keeps the network stable. Understanding difficulty is important for anyone assessing the viability of mining as an investment.
