Goran Dragic, born on May 6, 1986 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, is a Slovenian professional basketball player who has carved out a remarkable NBA career. Known for his quickness, creativity in the pick-and-roll, and competitive spirit, Dragic has played for the Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets, Miami Heat, and Toronto Raptors among others.
Dragic began his NBA journey after being selected 45th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2008 draft and was promptly traded to the Phoenix Suns. Learning behind Steve Nash, he developed into a scoring point guard. In the 2010 playoffs, a 23-point fourth quarter against the Spurs helped the Suns sweep San Antonio. He became the starter after Nash left, and in 2013–14 he averaged 20.3 points, 5.9 assists, and 3.2 rebounds, earning the NBA Most Improved Player award.
In 2015, Dragic was traded to the Miami Heat. He immediately became the team's starting point guard, leading them to the playoffs multiple times. In 2017–18, he was selected to the NBA All-Star Game for the first time, averaging 17.3 points, 4.8 assists, and 4.1 rebounds. Two years later, Dragic was instrumental in the Heat's surprising run to the NBA Finals in the Orlando bubble. He averaged 19.1 points and 4.4 assists in the playoffs, but a foot injury in Game 1 of the Finals hampered his performance.
In the 2021 offseason, the Toronto Raptors acquired Dragic as part of a sign-and-trade that sent Kyle Lowry to Miami. The Raptors were in a rebuilding phase and viewed Dragic as a mentor for their young backcourt. He appeared in only 5 regular-season games for Toronto, averaging 8.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 18.0 minutes per game. Despite the limited action, his leadership and work ethic left a positive impression.
Internationally, Dragic is a legend for Slovenia. He led the national team to its first EuroBasket title in 2017, averaging 22.6 points and 5.1 assists and earning the tournament MVP. He also led Slovenia to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), where they finished fourth.
