Full Node vs Lightweight Client

A full node downloads the entire blockchain and checks every transaction against the network's history. A lightweight client relies on full nodes for this information. For mining, running a full node is highly recommended. It gives you complete control and ensures you don't rely on a third party for critical information about the blockchain's state, which is vital for submitting valid block templates to your mining hardware.

Hardware Requirements

Setting up a mining node requires careful hardware planning. For a network like Bitcoin, your node needs a modern multi-core CPU, a minimum of 8GB of RAM, and crucially, a fast SSD with at least 500GB to 1TB of storage for the blockchain. The initial block download can take days over a standard connection and demands a stable, unmetered internet connection. For smaller or less demanding networks, the hardware specifications can be much lower, potentially running on a Raspberry Pi or a basic home server.

Essential Software for Your Node

The core software manages the network connection and ledger. For Bitcoin, Bitcoin Core is the standard. For Ethereum Classic, Geth or Erigon are common choices. The node software must communicate with mining hardware via protocols like Stratum. This often requires a mining proxy or stratum bridge (e.g., ckpool's proxy or a dedicated mining application) that connects your ASICs or GPUs to your local node instance. Security is paramount; RPC ports should never be exposed to the public internet, and the software must be kept updated.
