Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a cryptocurrency that was created in 2017 as a fork of Bitcoin to improve transaction speed and scalability. Like Bitcoin, BCH uses a proof-of-work consensus mechanism based on the SHA-256 algorithm. This means that mining BCH is very similar to mining Bitcoin; the same hardware can be used for both. Miners validate transactions, secure the network, and are rewarded with newly created BCH.
Miners compete to solve complex cryptographic puzzles using specialized hardware. The first miner to find a valid block broadcasts it to the network and receives a block reward plus transaction fees. The difficulty of mining adjusts every 2016 blocks to maintain an average block time of 10 minutes. Because BCH has a lower total hashrate than Bitcoin, the difficulty is significantly lower, which can make it more accessible for smaller miners when using mining pools.
Since BCH uses the SHA-256 algorithm, the most efficient hardware is ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) miners. Popular models include the Antminer S19 series, Whatsminer M30 series, and AvalonMiner 12 series. These machines offer high hashrates and energy efficiency. GPU mining is not viable for SHA-256 due to intense competition from ASICs. However, because BCH has a lower network hashrate, older or less powerful ASICs that are no longer profitable for Bitcoin can still be used to mine BCH effectively.
Most ASIC miners come with built-in firmware that allows you to configure mining pools and monitor performance. Advanced users can also use custom firmware like Braiins OS or VNish. For software configuration, you typically access the miner’s web interface, enter your pool address and worker credentials, and start mining. Some popular mining management tools include CGMiner, BFGMiner, and MultiMiner, though these are more commonly used for GPU mining.
Mining solo is not recommended due to the high variance in block discovery. Joining a mining pool allows you to combine your hashrate with other miners and receive consistent payouts. Well-known pools that support BCH include ViaBTC, Poolin, BTC.com, AntPool, and F2Pool. When selecting a pool, consider factors such as pool fees (usually 1–2%), minimum payout threshold, payment method (PPS, PPLNS), server location, and user interface.
The profitability of BCH mining depends on several variables: your miner’s hashrate and power consumption, electricity cost, the current BCH price, network difficulty, and pool fees. Because BCH price and difficulty fluctuate, it is essential to use a mining calculator to estimate potential returns. Keep in mind that mining equipment represents a significant upfront investment, and market conditions can change rapidly. Always evaluate your break-even point and consider the risks before investing.
Mining is not without risks. The cryptocurrency market is highly volatile; sudden price drops can make mining unprofitable. Difficulty adjustments can also affect returns. Additionally, regulatory changes in different countries may impact mining operations. Always stay informed about the legal and tax implications in your region.
No. SHA-256 mining requires powerful ASIC hardware. Mobile devices lack the computational power and are not designed for such intensive tasks.
Profitability depends on your electricity costs, hardware efficiency, and the market price of BCH. Use a mining calculator to get a personalized estimate. In many cases, mining BCH can be profitable if you have cheap electricity and efficient equipment.
Yes. Since both use the SHA-256 algorithm, any SHA-256 ASIC miner can mine either coin. You simply switch the pool configuration to point to a BCH pool.
