Serge Ibaka
Serge Ibaka is a professional basketball player from the Republic of the Congo who also holds Spanish citizenship. He is widely known for his exceptional shot-blocking ability and defensive presence in the NBA.
Early Career and NBA Draft
Ibaka began his professional career in Spain with CB L’Hospitalet before entering the 2008 NBA draft. He was selected with the 24th overall pick by the Seattle SuperSonics, who relocated to become the Oklahoma City Thunder. In Oklahoma City, he quickly became the team’s starting power forward and a defensive cornerstone.
NBA Career
From 2009 to 2016, Ibaka played for the Thunder, where he led the league in blocks per game in consecutive seasons (2011–12 and 2012–13). He helped the Thunder reach the NBA Finals in 2012 and made multiple deep playoff runs. In 2016, he was traded to the Orlando Magic and later that season moved to the Toronto Raptors. With the Raptors, Ibaka won his first NBA championship in 2019, providing crucial rim protection and floor spacing during the playoffs. After his championship season, he signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Clippers and later contributed to the Milwaukee Bucks. In his later career, he played for clubs in Europe, including Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
Achievements
Ibaka’s individual honors include two NBA blocks champion titles, three NBA All-Defensive Team selections (two First Team, one Second Team), and an NBA All-Star appearance in 2012. Internationally, he won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics with Spain and a gold medal at EuroBasket 2011. He remains one of the most respected defenders of his generation.
