Pickleball
If you are looking for a fun and accessible racket sport, pickleball might be just what you need. Combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, pickleball has rapidly grown in popularity among people of all ages.
What Is Pickleball?
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. It is played on a badminton-sized court (20 x 44 feet) with a slightly modified tennis net. Players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball.
Basic Rules
The serve must be underhand and hit below the waist. After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before players can volley (the two-bounce rule). Points are only scored by the serving side, and games are typically played to 11 points, win by 2. The non-volley zone (the kitchen) prevents players from smashing the ball from close range, adding a strategic element.
Why Pickleball?
The sport is easy to learn, low-impact, and highly social. It can be played indoors or outdoors, and the smaller court makes it less demanding than tennis. These qualities have made pickleball a favorite in community centers, retirement communities, and schools.
Getting Started
All you need is a paddle, a pickleball, and a net. Many local parks and recreation centers have pickleball courts available. You can often find beginner clinics to learn the basics quickly. It’s an excellent way to stay active and meet new people.
