PGA Championship
The PGA Championship is one of the four major championships in professional golf, organized by the Professional Golfers' Association of America. It is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport, featuring the strongest field of any major and drawing the best players from around the world.
The championship was first played in 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in New York. Originally a match play event, it switched to stroke play in 1958. Over the decades, the tournament has produced countless memorable moments and legendary champions, cementing its place in golf history.
The list of winners features some of golf's greatest names. Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen share the record for most victories with five each. Tiger Woods has won the PGA Championship four times (1999, 2000, 2006, 2007). Other multiple winners include Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and more recently Phil Mickelson (2005, 2021), Brooks Koepka (2018, 2019, 2023), and Justin Thomas (2017, 2022). The champion receives the Wanamaker Trophy, named after department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker.
The tournament consists of 72 holes of stroke play over four days, with a cut after 36 holes. It typically takes place in May, having moved from its traditional August slot in 2019. A unique feature is that the field includes both touring professionals and PGA club professionals; approximately 20 club professionals qualify each year, giving the championship an inclusive character not seen in the other majors.
The PGA Championship has been held at iconic venues across the United States, including Valhalla, Whistling Straits, Kiawah Island, Baltusrol, Southern Hills, and Oak Hill. The 2021 edition at Kiawah Island's Ocean Course saw Phil Mickelson become the oldest major champion in history at 50 years of age, a remarkable achievement that captured the sports world.
With its strong field, challenging course setups, and deep history, the PGA Championship continues to be a highlight of the golf calendar. Whether you are a dedicated golf fan or a casual observer, the tournament provides compelling competition and unforgettable moments.
