Nathan MacKinnon
Nathan MacKinnon is a Canadian professional ice hockey center and alternate captain for the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL). Known for his explosive speed, elite puck handling, and scoring ability, he is widely regarded as one of the best players in the game.
MacKinnon was born on September 1, 1995, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He played minor hockey with the Cole Harbour Red Wings before joining the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). In 2013, he led the Mooseheads to the Memorial Cup championship and was named the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Rookie of the Year.
He was selected first overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. MacKinnon made an immediate impact, scoring 63 points (24 goals, 39 assists) in his rookie season and winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's top rookie.
In the 2017-18 season, MacKinnon recorded 97 points (39 goals, 58 assists) and was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player, along with the Ted Lindsay Award for the most outstanding player as voted by his peers. He has continued to dominate, helping the Avalanche reach the playoffs consistently and finishing among the league leaders in scoring.
MacKinnon played a key role in leading the Colorado Avalanche to the Stanley Cup championship in 2022, contributing 13 goals and 21 assists in 20 postseason games. He was also a finalist for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
Internationally, MacKinnon has represented Canada on multiple occasions. He won a gold medal at the 2015 World Junior Championships and was part of the championship team at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. He has also competed for Canada at the IIHF World Championship.
