Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district since 2019. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, she is recognized for her progressive advocacy and as one of the first two Muslim women elected to the United States Congress.

Early Life and Education

Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Omar spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before immigrating to the United States as a teenager. She settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she became a naturalized citizen and graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in political science.

Political Career

Her political career began when she was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2016, becoming the first Somali-American legislator in the United States. In 2018, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where she serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Oversight and Accountability.
