Hans Niemann
Hans Moke Niemann (born June 20, 2003) is an American chess grandmaster who rose to prominence after defeating world champion Magnus Carlsen at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup. He earned the grandmaster title in 2021, becoming one of the youngest American players to achieve that rank. Niemann began playing chess at age 7 and progressed rapidly, earning the national master title by 10 and the international master title at 16. He trained intensively with grandmaster coaches and competed in European circuits to accelerate his development.
The Carlsen defeat ended the world champion’s 53-game unbeaten streak in classical chess and triggered one of the biggest controversies in modern chess. Carlsen withdrew from the tournament and posted a cryptic tweet implying Niemann had cheated. Chess.com later released a report stating that Niemann had likely cheated in more than 100 online games, including events with prize money. Niemann admitted to cheating in a few online matches when he was 12–16 years old but strongly denied ever cheating in over-the-board play.
The scandal prompted widespread debate about cheating detection and tournament security. In October 2022, Niemann filed a defamation lawsuit against Carlsen, Chess.com, and others. The lawsuit was dismissed in 2023, with the court citing lack of jurisdiction and failure to prove actual malice. Despite the legal setback, Niemann continues to compete professionally. He reached a peak FIDE rating of 2710 in 2023 and has participated in top-level events such as the Tata Steel Masters and the U.S. Chess Championship.
