Cale Makar
Cale Makar is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on October 30, 1998, in Calgary, Alberta, he developed his skills in the Alberta Junior Hockey League before playing college hockey at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. At UMass, he dominated the NCAA, winning the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in 2019. He is widely regarded as one of the most talented defencemen of his generation.
Makar was selected by the Avalanche in the first round, fourth overall, of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He made an immediate impact in the 2019 playoffs and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year in 2020. He helped lead the Avalanche to the Stanley Cup championship in 2022 and was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the league's best defenceman in 2023. He has also been selected to multiple NHL All-Star Games and continues to finish among the top scorers at his position.
