Billie Joe Armstrong

Billie Joe Armstrong is best known as the lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and guitarist of the American rock band Green Day. Born on February 17, 1972, in Oakland, California, Armstrong grew up in a musical family and began playing guitar at a young age. He met Mike Dirnt in elementary school, and the two formed the band Sweet Children in 1987, which later became Green Day.

Green Day's breakthrough album Dookie (1994) propelled the band to international fame, selling over 10 million copies in the United States alone. Hits like "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around" became anthems of the 1990s punk revival. The band continued with albums such as Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), and Warning (2000).

In 2004, Green Day released the rock opera American Idiot, a politically charged album that won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Armstrong's songwriting explored themes of disillusionment and social unrest, resonating with a new generation. The band followed with 21st Century Breakdown (2009) and the trilogy ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré! (2012).

Beyond Green Day, Armstrong has pursued side projects including Foxboro Hot Tubs, The Longshot, and the cover band The Coverups. He released his debut solo album, Foreverly (with Norah Jones), and has made occasional acting appearances. Known for his outspoken political views, Armstrong has been a vocal critic of war and corporate influence in music.

Armstrong continues to tour and record with Green Day, maintaining a lasting influence on punk rock and alternative music. His energetic performances and candid songwriting have earned him a place among the most iconic rock frontmen of his generation.
